If you’re running an ASUS router as your CPE, forming the connection between you and your ISP, set this option in your WAN settings to “No”!

This infuriating “Enable VPN+DHCP Connection” toggle, which is set to “Yes” by default. This is a major inconvenience when you are using an ISP which offers both PPPoE & IPoE/DHCP authentication, such as Quic.

Essentially this option forms its own DHCP dialer on top of whatever PPPoE or DHCP configuration you may have. If you’re unlucky enough for this defunct dialer to win the race and connect to your ISP, you’ll be left with no connectivity as this option doesn’t actually add any default route or NAT for the connection.

Apparently, this option was implemented for some Russian ISPs which first require users to establish a DHCP connection to the ISP for a local address, and then form a PPTP VPN dialer for their public internet access. Yep, PPTP in production, ouch.

Why this is enabled by default though is still a headscratcher – but for those of us not in Russia, just disable the damn thing and save yourself any potential for a headache.
